LOS ANGELES – Cosmetic surgeries and fitness centers have attracted widespread criticism after launching marketing campaigns targeting people who saw themselves as overweight in their FlashForwards.Marketing and advertising watchdog groups have filed complaints against 113 businesses in the past month alone, claiming such advertisements were sexist, predatory, offensive and demeaning.
One cosmetic surgery clinic in LA has been particularly inundated with complaints over billboards featuring a photograph of a naked, overweight woman, accompanied by the slogan: “Can’t face tomorrow? Be beautiful today.”
A spokesperson representing the cosmetic surgery industry in California says the industry has reported a 900% increase in consultations since the Global Blackout. “It’s one of the biggest spikes in business we’ve seen in the history of the field,” he said. “FlashForwards are making us re-evaluate what we want our futures to be. We’re simply giving people information: ‘If you don’t want to look like this six months from now, we can help.’
Another prominent LA gym franchise has also been targeted with complaints after publishing print advertisements targeting teenage girls. However, the gym’s spokesperson insisted the campaign was legitimate and simply catering to a demand.
“America’s in the middle of an obesity crisis,” he said. “Those FlashForwards just confirmed that by sticking a big mirror in front of our faces. Young people are starting to realize weight-loss won’t just happen to them. We’re just kicking them in the butt and asking, ‘You really want to be the same person six months from now?’”
However, many psychologists have also argued that such advertisements were dangerous. One specialist, who specializes in eating disorders in young people, said that such direct and forceful marketing was “abusive.”
“It’s coarse,” she said. “America might be going through a national obesity problem at the moment, but we’re also experiencing a national crisis of self-loathing and depression. Exploiting our fears and FlashForwards to make some money? That’s about as low as you can get.”

Dr Marcia Cleggs, spokesperson for the State Board of Psychologist, said that FlashForwards currently accounted for nearly 98 percent of patients’ primary discussion points with psychologists.
“Obviously, people have seen all manner of things in their FlashForwards and psychologists are working hard to help them make sense of it,” said Dr Cleggs. “Some of these things are traumatic but a surprising number of patients are trying to adjust to unexpected turns of fortune as well. It’s often unrecognized that an exciting new job or unexpected inheritance can place patients under the same high level of stress as a more unfortunate situation. We’re helping them cope.”
Dr Cleggs added many patients were people who had no visions whatsoever, but instead only saw darkness, which she referred to as “black visions.” Many have interpreted these as meaning they will be dead by the FlashForward date, which was seen in visions worldwide to coincide with April 29th 2010, 10PM.
However, Cleggs laughed off these theories, adding that she herself had experienced a so-called “black vision.” “Both my husband and I were asleep at the time of the GBO and we didn’t dream anything that night. But this doesn’t mean we’re going to die – it could simply mean we were sleeping 6 months in the future as well. It makes sense.”
There is strong debate amongst neuroscientists about what these so-called “black visions” might mean. Some theorists have noted that while “black visions” have affected people of all ages and backgrounds, they have been particularly prevalent in the elderly and terminally ill.

International health officials rarely have much to laugh about, but many are apparently amused by persistent theories that pandemics and viruses are behind the Global Blackout. All over the world, there have been very few reports — if any — of discernible signs of illness in the wake of the GBO, besides some cases of nausea, disorientation and, in one case, “loss of appetite.” Which is to say, we’re not exactly in SARS or SWINE FLU territory. Scientists agree that the lasting effects on the survivors of the Global Blackout are far more likely to be psychological, rather than physical.
On the internet, however, one the most popular pandemic-related theories was that the GBO was the result of a new strain of virus, which was capable of being activated by external factors like atmospheric conditions.
Scientists have resoundingly debunked this theory. “The only thing contagious about the GBO are these ridiculous ideas about a virus,” argued a prominent health official. However, the claims have been insistent enough that this week, the world health authorities were forced to release a statement stating that the Global Blackout was not a health issue, nor had anything to do with viruses as they were currently defined.
“There is no indication that the phenomenon of the Global Blackout is a condition that is contagious,” one authority said. “Every single person on the planet experienced the same phenomenon. While this experience has been unprecedented, health authorities cannot intervene. There are no symptoms of illness, so we cannot classify the Global Blackout as the result of contagion.”

Here’s a hypothetical for you. Say you’re the head of a new government Task Force, which requires the direct and voluntary involvement of, say, roughly seven billion people. How do you convince these people to share their personal stories, not only with you, but also with the entire world?
That’s the nightmare question that faced the Mosaic Collective in the wake of the GBO. Their solution? Enlist the best and the brightest to spearhead the effort. In this case, that meant Intelligence Analyst, Marcie Turoff.
We’ve seen Marcie Turoff in action, interviewing people at Comic-Con and on the promos for the soon-to-be launched, Mosaic Collective Website. She’s a young, attractive and level-headed woman, the one calling for calm and reassuring us that “together, we have a future.”
Clearly, Turoff is a great spokesperson for the Mosaic Collective. Young, brilliant, and a dynamic speaker; she possesses all the skills necessary to rally a global audience behind Mosaic’s cause. In the short time since the GBO, she’s managed to collect stories from people of all walks of life – from Midwestern grandmothers to Tibetan monks. And she’s just getting started.
There are very few things we actually know about Turoff, though one thing stands out. Those who find Turoff’s face familiar may remember her image from the front cover of news magazines as a 16-year old, when she became the second youngest person ever to win a national chess championship. (Bobby Fischer was the youngest.) Even now, at 26, to be working the Mosaic Collective at this level clearly indicates the hallmarks of a child prodigy. Her background as a chess player is also likely to come in handy as she searches for patterns among people’s shared visions.
Exactly how the Mosaic Collective uses Turoff when it finally goes online remains to be seen. But right now — without any official online presence, logos or branding – Marcie Turoff is the Mosaic Collective. This helps everyone. When Turoff asks us, “What did you see?” it seems like genuine, basic human curiosity and concern. You’re compelled to share your story with her.
All of which means, Marcie Turoff may just turn out to be the Mosaic Collective’s greatest asset yet.

I’ve spoken highly of Wedeck on this blog before, and with good reason. Before transferring to the Los Angeles Field Office in 2001, Wedeck was a highly respected member of the Bureau in D.C. His reputation as both a canny investigator and an astute player in the D.C. game is well known throughout this country’s circles of power. And now, he’s brought that same energy and ambition to Los Angeles, and to the formation of the Mosaic Task Force.
Directly under Wedeck is Mark Benford, who’s been given the title of lead investigator within the Mosaic Task Force. A former cop with the Cleveland PD, Benford’s known as a respected workhorse who tends to fly under the radar – a good quality for a Bureau agent.
And then, finally, there’s Marcie Turoff – the young, crackerjack analyst who served as spokesperson for Mosaic at Comic-Con. A former chess prodigy, Turoff’s got a strong background in pattern recognition, which is no doubt why Wedeck chose her to help collect people’s FlashForwards for the Mosaic Collective. After meeting her, I have utter faith that in sifting through the clues of what people saw, she and the rest of her team will be able to draw connections, and fill in the greater mosaic in which we hold a unique piece.
Mosaic’s general approach is an interesting one; in one way they’re offering the public a service – an international clearinghouse to find corroborating information for FlashForwards. At the same time, they’re building a database that could potentially create a a vivid portrait of our collective future – and possibly explain whatever could be behind the GBO itself. It’s not quite open source, but it’s close, and seeing the Bureau embrace a more “web 2.0” approach speaks well of Wedeck’s instincts.
I’ll continue to update you as I find out more about the team at the Mosaic Task Force. In the meantime, you should feel confident that Wedeck has surrounded himself with good people; committed to the getting the same thing we all want – the truth. Nobody else has their eyes on these guys but me – and frankly, I think they’re onto something.
